Bioblitz Bee Pollinator

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Lower Makefield Township Invites Community to Participate in the 2024 “Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz” at Five Mile Woods Preserve

Lower Makefield Township, PA – August 30, 2024 – This September, Lower Makefield Township’s Department of Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), is excited to announce the 2024 “Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz” at the Five Mile Woods Preserve, located at 1305 Big Oak Road in Yardley, PA.

The “Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz” is a dynamic, community-driven event aimed at creating an environmental inventory of the pollinators that call our area home. A “bioblitz” is a focused, area-specific survey conducted by scientists, natural resource managers, and passionate community volunteers like you. The goal of this initiative is to gain a deeper understanding of the pollinator species within our community and to evaluate whether the Five Mile Woods Preserve offers the necessary habitat for these crucial creatures to flourish.

Pollinators, including insects, hummingbirds, and even bats, rely on specific plants and soil conditions to find food, shelter, and nesting or overwintering sites. By gathering data during this bioblitz, we aim to make informed decisions that will enhance and protect the habitats that these vital species depend on.

How to Get Involved:

All members of the community are encouraged to participate in the 2024 Parks for Pollinators Bioblitz by photographing pollinators observed within the Five Mile Woods Preserve throughout September. These photos can be easily uploaded to the iNaturalist database using the iNaturalist mobile app, a free and user-friendly platform for species identification. Every pollinator observation submitted during September will be reviewed by bioblitz project managers, shared with the NRPA’s nationwide 2024 Pollinators Bioblitz campaign, and will contribute significantly to the environmental inventory of Five Mile Woods Preserve.

In addition to independent observations, the Preserve Naturalist will lead three scheduled public events during the bioblitz:

  • Moth Night: Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 8:00 PM
  • Pollinator Walks: Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 10:00 AM and Saturday, September 14, 2024, at 2:00 PM

These events offer a fantastic opportunity to learn more about pollinators, contribute to conservation efforts, and enjoy the natural beauty of the Five Mile Woods Preserve.

For more information or to RSVP for an event, please email FiveMileWoods@LMT.org. We look forward to seeing you in the Woods!
