Lower Makefield Township is aware of the extremely dry conditions that we are experiencing and the potential hazards that these conditions could cause. The best prevention starts with everyone using common sense while enjoying the outdoors. The greatest danger of wildfires in Pennsylvania occurs during the spring months of March, April, and May, and the autumn months of October and November. In Pennsylvania, 99 percent of all wildfires are caused by people.
Certain conditions are necessary for a wildfire to occur:
- An available fuel source, such as dried grass or leaves
- Dry conditions, including low relative humidity
- An ignition source -- some way for the fire to start
Most wildfires can be avoided by adhering to these commonsense safety tips:
- Don’t discard cigarettes, matches or smoking materials on the
- Use indoor wood stoves and fireplaces carefully, both can emit embers that spark fires. Fully douse ashes with water before disposal.
- When towing a trailer, ensure you aren’t dragging chains. If a trailer chain drags on the road, it can create sparks that fly into nearby vegetation, igniting a
- Be mindful where you park or drive your Hot exhaust systems can ignite dry vegetation if parked or driven over it.
- Be careful when cutting your grass or using other yard tools. Power tools like lawnmowers and chainsaws can throw off sparks that ignite dry grass or
- Keep matches and lighters away from Teach youth about fire safety.
Fire Prevention starts at home and continues when you are out in public places with being cautious, safe, and ensuring any fires that are created are always monitored and are fully extinguished prior to leaving.
