George Congo

George was born in LMT in August of 1847 (1). His parents were Samuel and Synthia Congo. Samuel was born in NJ and was there through 1830. By the 1840 census, records show he was living in Middletown, Bucks County.
By age 13, George was working as a laborer on a farm in LMT. (2)

Regiment: Civil War (Union), United States Colored Troops 22nd Infantry, Company A (Union)
Enlistment: Jan 8, 1864 as a Private, age 17
Discharge: Oct 16, 1865 as a Sergeant
Memorial: Part of the African American Civil War Memorial, Plaque B-38
Service: The 22nd Infantry Regiment, U.S. Colored Troops was organized January 29, 1864, and mustered out October 16, 1865. While in service:

- Enlisted Died of Disease or Accident: 144

After serving in the war, he came back and was married to Rose Gibbs by 1870 (5). We have no records of Rose and George having children. In 1880, they lived with their 8-year-old niece Rose Ann Congo and Rose’s mother, Mary Jane (6). We know she died around 1893
In 1894, George married Eliza Ann Brown-Johnson (7). The Browns have many buried at Slate Hill. Eliza also had a prior marriage. In 1900, they were living together with Eliza’s brother, Elwood Brown (8).
George died 2/22/1901, at 55. His pension for his Civil War service was not approved until later that year (9).
Eliza died in 1916 (10).
