Welcome to the Lower Makefield Township Community Garden!
Lower Makefield Township offers Community Garden Plots at Memorial Park, providing a shared open space where residents can come together, connect with nature, and enjoy the many health benefits of growing fresh, nutritious produce. Whether you're a seasoned green thumb or just starting out, our garden is the perfect place to plant, grow, and harvest alongside a welcoming community of fellow gardeners.

We have two types of garden plots:
- Intro Plots. For beginning gardeners, we have a limited number of Intro Plots in a communal plot. Typical bed is 3’ X 8’. Multiples may be assigned depending on availability.
- Pioneer Plots. For experienced gardeners, we have larger half plot (25’ x 25’). These will require the gardener to put up fencing, gates, beds, remove sod and till the soil, etc.

Lower Makefield Township Community Garden Rules
The following rules are designed to ensure that all gardeners have safe, enjoyable, and productive gardening experience. Please review them carefully before participating.
- Use at Your Own Risk: The Lower Makefield Township Community Garden is provided as a courtesy to the public. All gardeners use this space at their own risk. The Township assumes no responsibility for personal injury, theft, or vandalism.
- Plot Assignments: Garden plots are limited to one per household. As space permits plots may be available for use by groups, clubs, or organizations.
- Personal Use Only: Plots are for personal and household use only. Selling or giving away produce grown in the plots for commercial purposes is not permitted.
- Plot Registration: Plots are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis each year. Returning gardeners may receive priority for plot renewal.
- Plot Fees: At this time there are no fees associated with the garden plots however fees may be assessed in the future.
- Garden Hours: The garden is open daily from dawn until dusk.
- Tools and Equipment: You are responsible for your own tools and equipment there is a spicket and hose on the premises for your use.
- Children in the Garden: Children under 14 must be always accompanied and supervised by an adult.
- Weed and Waste Disposal: Weeds and plant material must be disposed of in the designated compost area. Trash and litter must be taken with you as this park is carry-in/carry-out. Compost or trash may not be thrown or placed anywhere else.
- Inspections and Compliance: Plots must be actively used by a designated start date. Plots will be inspected periodically. Gardeners with excessively weedy or neglected plots will receive a warning. If no action is taken within two weeks, the plot may be reassigned. Gardeners who abandon a plot may not be assigned a new one.
- Pest and Weed Control: Only organic pest control methods, such as insecticidal soap, are permitted. Herbicide and black plastic mulch are strictly prohibited.
- Harvesting: Gardeners may only harvest from their assigned plots.
- Fencing and Structures:
- Individual fencing is permitted but must be made of chicken wire or other open mesh material under 6 feet in height.
- Fencing must be placed within the assigned plot boundaries.
- Planting Considerations: Tall or sprawling plants must not interfere with neighboring plots. All gardeners may not grow illegal substances.
- End-of-Season Cleanup:
- Plots must be cleared of weeds and plant debris at the end of the growing season.
- Permanent fencing and structures may remain if the gardener intends to renew their lease.
- All personal belongings and debris must be cleaned up at the end of the season.
- Pathways and Accessibility: Garden paths must be kept clear of vehicles, equipment, and debris.
- Water Conservation: Water use should be minimized. Mulching with leaves, grass clippings, or hay is encouraged to retain moisture.
- Volunteer Time: All residents who utilize a plot are required to volunteer five hours a year in the common areas for maintenance help
- No Burning: Burning of any kind is prohibited.
By participating in the Lower Makefield Township Community Garden, gardeners agree to abide by these rules to ensure a positive community gardening experience for all. Failure to comply may result in the loss of gardening privileges.
