Thomas Girton
Thomas Girton
1813-1901
Thomas was born on Aug. 10, 1813, in Bucks County. He married Mary Anne Nice in April of 1835. They had 11 children together, six of whom lived to adulthood. (1)
Thomas worked as a butcher with a shop at 35 S Main Street. The same building where La La Lobster currently resides. He was well respected in this community & genuinely loved by all who know him. (4) He lived in for over 60 years living in the same house for over 50 of those years. He was active in the M.E. Church. (1)
He was often in the paper due to his social activities. One time he was in the paper for pursuing the theft of his chickens. Turns out the culprit was a neighbor's dog. (2) Oops!!
His son Gardner Girton took over his butcher business and ran it for an additional 31 years. View a photo of Thomas & Gardner in front of Girton’s Meat Market. (photo courtesy of Yardley Historical Association.)
Gardner also was a Yardley fire fighter. Interestingly, Gardner was the last person on the Taylorsville bridge before it was washed away in a Delaware Flood in 1903. (3)
Thomas died at the old age of 87 in 1901. (1) Though records state he was buried at the “Old Stone Burial Ground” (1) (one of the many names for Slate Hill Cemetery throughout the years), there is no record of the location of his burial. We can only assume he is buried here near the many Girtons resting in this area.
